Face Mask Fit Testing in Accordance with ASTM F3407 and ASTM F3502
Intertek can assist manufacturers with fit testing to demonstrate masks performance based on overall design and not just material properties as other mask tests do. Fit testing is based on a panel of 20 users with very specific facial dimensions. The test uses a sodium chloride (NaCl) particle generated within a contained room, and then the instrument measures the amount of NaCl that gets into the mask via leakage or filter penetration. This measurement is then ratioed to determine a fit factor.
Measurements are captured while the user is performing various movements that simulate real life. Each step of the fit test is performed for one-minute, including normal breathing, deep breathing, turning head side to side, moving head up and down, talking, bending over (or jogging), and a grimace. Additionally, there are passages the user recites to assure facial muscle movement, and how the mask performs when doing so.
